The University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova is a young but fast-growing university in Romania, specialized in providing medical training for various groups of people from a large area of the country, including undergraduate and postgraduate programs, doctoral degrees and specialist courses. Our university consists of four faculties, covering all traditional fields of medical studies, from general medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and nursing to physiotherapy and midwifery, comprising about 4,000 students and 500 teaching staff. Research and internationalization are two key elements in our general strategy, and the implementing policies we have developed in this respect follow both an intensive approach of setting out innovative and far-reaching projects as well as an extensive one, in enlarging our network of institutional partners with more institutions from our country and from abroad undertaking activities related to the medical fields.

As a major focus point of the recent strategic plans of the University, the scientific research activity has evolved constantly, including both research funding and research results. Thus the infrastructure was slowly rebuilt, with more than 1 million Euros invested for scientific equipment only in 2008. A major infrastructure project was won this year and contracted with the National Agency of Scientific Research, with a total amount of approximately 17 million Euros. The project should start soon and includes a modern PET-CT and cyclotron facility, beside other specialized research facilities in different departments. Major research in the university is focused on cancer and analysis of tissue samples through histological, cytogenetical and molecular biological methods such as real-time PCR. Recent research directions also include the non-invasive optical imaging of living tissues, including confocal laser endomicroscopy and optical coherence tomography. Currently, more than 100 scientific and educational projects are taking place in the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Craiova. Research results also increased steadily in the past 5 years, with 107 ISI Web of Science articles being published in 2008. Scientific activity is also supported from European Union structural funds, with 21 PhD researchers benefiting from a three-year scholarship that includes salaries, consumables and mobility abroad, with a similar scheme being submitted for financing of several post-doctoral researchers.

To date, our university has established formal liaisons with institutions from Germany, Italy, Denmark, Moldavia, France, Portugal, Turkey, Greece, on a bilateral basis or in the framework of the cooperation programs of the European Union. Also, we are an active member of several international university organizations, such as AUF - Agence universitaire de la Francophonie, AMEE - Association for Medical Education in Europe, CIDMEF - Conférence Internationale des Doyens et des Facultés de Médecine d'Expression Française, AMSE - Association of Medical Schools in Europe, SIDA-NET -  Réseau d'information francophone sur le Sida.
