Conference for the Launch of the Project "COMPAS – Educational Community Mobilized for a Sustainable Academic Future"

Project co-financed by the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+) through the Education and Employment Program 2021 – 2027 Call for Projects: PEO/291/PEO_P6/OP4/ESO4.6/PEO_A40 „First Student in the Family” – Less Developed Regions Project Title: "COMPAS – Educational Community Mobilized for a Sustainable Academic Future" SMIS Code: 325402 PRESS RELEASE March 27, 2025 LAUNCH OF THE PROJECT COMPAS – Educational Community Mobilized for a Sustainable Academic Future The University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Craiova, as the Beneficiary, in partnership with the Association Always for Europe, the Association for the Promotion of Youth in Craiova (APT-C), and the Henri Coandă Theoretical High School in Craiova, announces the launch of the project titled "COMPAS – Educational Community Mobilized for a Sustainable Academic Future", SMIS Code 325402, Funding Contract: G2025-3981/ 20.01.2025. The overall objective of the project is to increase access to and participation in tertiary education in the South-West Oltenia region, by facilitating the transition to university studies for 156 high school students and 20 high school graduates who did not pass the baccalaureate exam, coming from disadvantaged groups. This will be achieved through measures to prevent and combat university dropout among 176 students from disadvantaged backgrounds, as well as through actions aimed at making higher education institutions more accessible over the course of 3 years. The project has a duration of 36 months and will be implemented from February 1, 2025, to January 31, 2028. The total value of the project is 7,948,134.47 RON, of which the non-reimbursable co-financing from the European Union is 6,755,914.30 RON. The goal of the project is to implement educational and socio-economic support measures – preventive measures, intervention measures, and compensatory measures – that will ensure the integration and retention of children and young people from disadvantaged families in pre-university and university education, thereby contributing to “creating the framework that allows equitable access to quality university studies for every young person, regardless of their socio-economic background, without any form of discrimination.” Target group: 156 students at ISCED level 3-4, enrolled in public pre-university educational institutions, in at least the 11th grade, coming from families with low parental educational levels/meet the conditions for receiving social scholarships/are of Roma ethnicity; 20 high school graduates from the last 2 school years prior to the school year when the project becomes operational, who have not passed the baccalaureate exam, residing in the South-West Oltenia region; 176 students enrolled in an ISCED level 5-6 program, who do not already hold a bachelor's degree and come from families with low parental educational levels/meet the conditions for receiving social scholarships/are of Roma ethnicity. Proposed Results – High school students: 176 individuals will receive counseling, facilitating the transition to university education and contributing to an increase in the number of target group members who wish to become students; At least 100 students and high school graduates will be supported to facilitate the transition to higher education through remedial activities; 156 individuals will benefit from subsidies, and 20 students will receive free accommodation and meals in the dormitory; Students will benefit from informational caravans, workshops promoting new work models and skills for a sustainable future, organized visits to higher education institutions, support groups, and Roma culture workshops. Proposed Results – Students: 176 individuals will receive counseling, and at least 100 students will be supported through remedial activities to prevent and combat university dropout, contributing to an increase in the number of target group members who complete their university studies; 176 students will benefit from subsidies, and 10 students will receive accommodation and meals in the dormitory; Students will benefit from a virtual freshman guide, guided campus tours organized for new students, informal activities with faculty members and senior students, study skills development workshops, and peer tutoring programs; A Remedial Learning Center will be established, providing the necessary framework for learning and personal development for 100 students; Access for individuals with disabilities will be facilitated through the purchase of 20 adapted desks for individuals with disabilities, the installation of a servo-chair for disability access, the purchase of a video documentation, video management, and video streaming system, and the acquisition of specific licenses. Innovative Strategies for Early Diagnosis of Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma at the Core of the Early Career Researchers' Meeting within the COST TRANSPAN Action

A session dedicated to "Personalized Approaches to the Early Diagnosis of Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma" will be one of the highlights of the Early Career Investigator's Meeting, organized under the auspices of the COST Action 21116 – TRANSPAN. This scientific networking initiative brings together young researchers from across Europe who aim to accelerate progress in understanding and treating one of the most aggressive types of cancer. During the session, PhD students and postdoctoral researchers will present their latest discoveries in key areas such as the identification of new biomarkers, the development of advanced imaging techniques, and the implementation of diagnostic tools based on artificial intelligence. The event encourages interdisciplinary collaboration by bringing together expertise from molecular biology, bioinformatics, and clinical research. Topics covered will include advances in liquid biopsy, multi-omic profiling, and precision medicine solutions—all with the potential to radically transform the way early detection of pancreatic cancer is performed. Interactive discussions will create a conducive environment for the exchange of ideas and provide participants with an integrated perspective on current challenges and emerging opportunities in this highly relevant field. By supporting early-career researchers and fostering international collaborations, the meeting contributes to the development of a robust network of experts committed to improving personalized diagnosis and, consequently, survival rates for patients affected by pancreatic adenocarcinoma. "UMF Young Ambassadors for Rare Diseases" student photography competition

The students of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova are invited to participate in the photo contest organized by the Discipline of Genetics and the Regional Center of Medical Genetics Dolj. Present rare diseases through your lens: what you know, how you see, how you feel and what you do about them and for them, rare people. Let's define "RARE" (through visual synonyms) How would you visually illustrate a rare disease without using obvious medical images? How to read the Genetic Code: a journey into genetics and rare diseases, 2025

On February 11-14, 2025, the Medical Students Society of Craiova and the Human Genomics Laboratory (LGU - UMFCV), with the support of UMF Craiova, the Student Circle of Cell and Molecular Biology and the Association of Little People, organize the second edition of the project "How to read the Genetic Code: a journey into genetics and rare diseases". This initiative was launched last year in memory of Prof. PhD. Mihai Ioana, a landmark in the field of medical genetics in Romania, whose contributions have had a significant impact on genomic research and education on rare diseases. The event is organized in February, the month of International Rare Disease Day. This event aims to continue the campaign to raise awareness of the importance of early diagnosis, advanced research and community support for people affected by rare genetic disorders. The activities will begin on February 11, when students from UMF Craiova will visit high schools to deliver educational presentations. They will be at: "Carol I" National College from 8:30 to 9:20 AM "Elena Cuza" National College from 10:30 to 11:20 AM "Ștefan Velovan" Pedagogical College from 1:30 to 2:20 PM Opening of the art exhibition Every Voice Counts: why we talk about rare diseases In partnership with the "Marin Sorescu" High School of Arts, an exhibition of students' artwork will be inaugurated, showcasing visual interpretations of the emotions and experiences of patients with rare diseases. This exhibition aims to provide an artistic perspective on the impact these conditions have on daily life, inviting the public to reflect on the importance of empathy and support for the patient community. The opening event will take place on February 14, at 12:00 PM, in the Aula Magna. Also on February 14, at 1:00 PM in the Aula Magna, the national conference "Every Voice Counts: Why We Talk About Rare Diseases" will take place, featuring special guest Dorica Dan from the National Alliance for Rare Diseases Romania, NoRo Center, and APWR Zalău. At 3:00 PM, the Human Genomics Laboratory will open its doors to students, offering them the opportunity to explore research activities in molecular genomics up close. This interactive experience will allow them to discover the applications of genomic medicine and understand the importance of research in diagnosing rare genetic disorders. Education for integrity at UMF Craiova

Students of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova participated in an educational activity dedicated to promoting integrity, organized by the Dolj County Anti-Corruption Service. The event took place in the context of the International Anti-Corruption Day and was supported by a prevention officer from the Service. During the meeting, the students learned essential information about the role and competences of the General Anticorruption Directorate, the main corruption offenses and the consequences of involvement in such crimes. They were also shown how to report to the authorities if they become witnesses or victims of corruption. This initiative is part of efforts to strengthen a culture of integrity among future healthcare professionals. UMF Craiova encourages preventive education in the spirit of respect for professional ethics and deontology.

Lecture: "Outcomes and Final Results of Implant Prosthodontic Treatment" by Prof. Gerta Kaçani

Prof. Gerta Kaçani (University of Tirana) gives a lecture titled Outcomes and Final Results of Implant Prosthodontic Treatment on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at 12:00, in room 311, A' Extension. Prof. Gerta Kaçani is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Tirana, Albania. With extensive experience in the field of dentistry, she has contributed significantly to research and practice in prosthodontics and implantology. Her works include studies on the treatment of dentine hypersensitivity and the impact of orthodontic treatments on patients' quality of life. The lecture will address practical aspects and outcomes of implant prosthetic treatments, providing valuable information for professionals in the field. Prof. Gerta Kaçani is currently present at UMF Craiova together with Dr. Elona Casli (international relations expert), Dr. Brikena Sinani (health management expert), Dr. Nereida Zeneli (nephrology specialist), Dr. Eriselda Simoni (OMF surgery specialist), Dr. Silvana Bara (dental medicine specialist), Dr. Rozela Xhemnica (dental medicine specialist), Dr. Adela Perolla.

UMF Craiova wins two research projects in the UEFISCDI-TE national competition

The University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova strengthens its position in the field of medical research by winning two projects in the competition "Research projects to stimulate young independent teams" (TE), organized by UEFISCDI. At national level, out of the 769 proposals submitted by universities and research centers, only a restricted selection was funded, and UMF Craiova is among the winning institutions. The two winning projects address cutting edge research areas: 1. "Multimodal assessment of the dynamic biological behavior of pancreatic cancer", project director and project leader Head of works PhD Bogdan Silviu Ungureanu. This project aims to investigate the dynamic behavior of pancreatic cancer using advanced and integrated assessment methods. The research aims to identify the biological mechanisms influencing tumor progression, providing an innovative perspective on potential personalized therapies. 2. "Assessment of cardiac remodeling by advanced imaging in patients with atrial fibrillation", project director, assistant prof. PhD Diana Ruxandra Hădăreanu. The project explores the use of advanced imaging technologies to understand cardiac remodeling in the context of atrial fibrillation. Expected results include the identification of imaging markers with high prognostic value and the optimization of treatment strategies. UMF Craiova congratulates the research teams and wishes them success in the implementation of the winning projects!

Smile and health through education

The University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova (UMF Craiova) and the "Carol Davila" University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Bucharest, through the faculties of dentistry, are launching the project "Smile and health through education". The initiative is based on collaboration between teachers and students of the two universities, with the aim of providing support and dental services to homeless people, thus contributing to community health through education and direct care. Within the framework of the project, a mobile practice will go to the Emergency Social Center for Homeless People "St. Vasile" to provide free dental consultations and treatments to those in need, on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, from 9.00 am to 2.00 pm. The team of doctors from UMF Craiova involved in the project includes teachers from the Faculty of Dentistry, as well as students from years V and VI. Patients will benefit free of charge from a wide range of services, including treatment plans, oral hygiene (professional scaling and brushing) and oral health education. This initiative is an example of academic and medical collaboration that combines education with effective action to benefit disadvantaged people. UMF Craiova and UMF "Carol Davila" are dedicated to health education, focusing on the needs of vulnerable people and contributing to improving their quality of life. The project "Smile and health through education" is part of the institutional program of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova, within which a mobile medical unit provides medical services to the population with reduced accessibility.
