7. DISCIPLINE OBJECTIVES (based on the grid of specific competences acquired)

7.1 The general objective of the discipline

• Development of diagnostic capabilities and sequential planning of dental treatment in oral rehabilitation.

• Assimilation of objectives and concepts of complex oral rehabilitation: tooth rehabilitation, periodontal rehabilitation, occlusal rehabilitation, surgery, prosthetic restorations in complex oral rehabilitation, oral rehabilitation for patients with special needs, oral rehabilitation for patients at risk in dental practice.

• Acquiring the dental emergency management concepts that may appear in the dental office.

7.2 The specific objectives of the discipline

Upon completion of discipline student will be able to acquire:
COGNITIVE ABILITIES, which will allow :
• To master the methodology of collecting anamnestic data for a correct and complete diagnosis formulation.

• To acquire the objectives and concepts of complex oral rehabilitation.

• To master the necessary knowledge for sequential treatment in oral rehabilitation: acute treatment phase, oral disease control treatment phase, definitive treatment phase, maintenance treatment phase.

• To master the knowledge required for oral rehabilitation in patients with special needs.

• To master the knowledge required for individualized oral rehabilitation.

• To master the knowledge required for oral rehabilitation in patients at risk in dental practice.

• Acquire the concepts of dental emergency management that may appear in the dental office.
PRACTICAL SKILLS
• Identify the main reason that brought the patient to the dentist and obtain the history of the dental disease in the context of the patient's overall medical history.

• Creating a dental file containing the patient's medical data and record accurately the course of treatment.

• Identify patient behavioral disorders (including anxiety).

• Implement a medical questionnaire or consult the patient's physician to clarify issues related to general health.

• Perform an extra oral and intraoral examination suitable for the patient, including assessing vital signs, and record the results in writing.

• Develop and compose the full tooth examination, periodontal examination and oral mucosa examination.

• Read dental x-rays and indicate other forms of medical imaging relevant to the dentist.

• Prescribe laboratory clinical examinations and other diagnostic techniques and procedures, ensuring their reliability and validity, and interpreting the results.

• Examine dental casts and occlusal relationships on dental casts mounted on dental articulator.

• Evaluate salivary function. Evaluate oro-facial pain.

• Recognize the signs of abuse, ill-treatment or abandonment of patients and inform competent law courts.

• Get a firm consent from the patient.

• Identify all general illnesses and appreciate the extent to which they or their treatment will affect the performance of dental care.

• Locate carious lesions and dental wear, appreciate their extent and severity.

• To diagnose tooth abnormalities and periodontitis likely to compromise periodontal health, function, or aesthetics, and to know when to intervene.

• To differentiate between healthy and affected dental pulp and to recognize when to intervene.

• To recognize the clinical signs of illness or oral mucosal disorders, including cancer, and identify the situations requiring intervention.

• To diagnose maxillofacial problems, to recognize clinical signs of acute or chronic cranio-facial pain, regardless of origin: somatic, neurological or psychiatric; identify and diagnose situations requiring the intervention of a dentist or other specialist.

• To identify the patient's aesthetic requirements and determine the level at which they can be met.

• To make an orthodontic diagnosis and to send patient to specialist.

• To diagnose temporo-mandibular joint disorders (TMD).

• To diagnose dental and medical emergencies.

• To develop and establish effective strategies for the prevention of medical and dental emergencies occurring while practicing the profession, and establish protocols for the treatment of these emergencies, if any.

• To diagnose and treat dental emergencies of pulp, periodontal or traumatic origin.

• To diagnose and address as soon as possible the specialist for medical or orofacial emergencies that is not a dental practitioner's normal competence.

• To acquire the skills of sequential planning of complete and complex oral rehabilitation treatment, personalized according to the patient's particularities.

• To recognize medical risk and learn the principles of assessment and dental treatment of the patient with medical risk.

ATTITUDES
• To establish a practitioner-patient relationship that allows an effective dental care.

• To acquire the ability to communicate with the patient to obtain data needed to formulate a correct and complete diagnosis.

• To acquire the ability to communicate with the patient to obtain informed consent for oral rehabilitation treatment.

- prove a professional attitude towards the patient and the working team

- coordinate the activity in the dental office in collaboration with the dental assistant and technician

- establish and maintain a climate of danger-free work

- know the importance of continuing medical education to develop professional skills based on current scientific data

- apply ethical principles related to dental practice

- respect patients' rights

- recognize the signs of abuse or ill-treatment of patients and inform the competent legal courts

- give priority to those treatment options that meet the patient's individual needs

- to observe the legal, administrative and behavioral procedures in the practice of dental medicine

9. CORROBORATING THE DISCIPLINE CONTENT WITH THE EXPECTATIONS OF EPISTEMIC COMMUNITY REPRESENTATIVES, PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS AND EMPLOYEE REPRESENTATIVES RELATING TO THIS PROGRAM

  • Oral rehabilitation and specialty practice  is a fundamental discipline, mandatory for a student in his preparation for becoming a dentist.
  • The knowledges, practical skills and the attitudes learned on this discipline develop diagnostic capabilities and abilities of sequential planning of dental treatment in oral rehabilitation. Objectives and concepts of complex oral rehabilitation (tooth rehabilitation, periodontal rehabilitation, occlusal rehabilitation, surgery, prosthetic restorations in complex oral rehabilitation, oral rehabilitation for patients with special needs, oral rehabilitation for patients at risk in dental practice, dental emergency management concepts that may appear in the dental office) contribute to fix and correlate the knowledge gained in other disciplines like preventive dentistry, oral pathology, oral radiology, cariology, endodontics, oral surgery, periodontology, implantology, dental prosthetics.
